The Salk Institute
I første semester det tredje året ved UoN ble undervisningen i design samkjørt med en reel studentkonkurranse holdt av den amerikanske foreningen "The Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture" (ACSA). I oppgaven skulle studentene ta for seg Louis Kahns ikoniske Salk Institute og utvide fasilitetene med nye laboratorier, samfunnshus og boliger. Til konkurransens avsluttende fase ble følgende tekst lagt ved:
Kahn's redefinition of "form" as the essence of a program, rather than a building's eventual shape, marked the beginning of an unravelling of functionalist theory. Our proposal extends that trajectory. The solid form of our laboratory is cast from the negative spaces between and within the laboratories by Kahn; the shape of our community centre is in turn cast from our labs, and finally a residential building is cast from our community centre. Metaphorically, and jokingly, we see this as a kind of architectural rein(Kahn)ation, and imagine Kahn's masterwork as having a soul that can be reborn in various guises. At a theoretical level, Kahn's critique of the Modernist dictum that "form follows function" appears in the guise of our unorthodox approach to generating forms, that only loosely and secondarily match the functions for which they're intended.
Jeg arbeidet i hovedsak alene med hele denne oppgaven, med unntak av den avsluttende fasen hvor jeg fikk hjelp av Philip McGarva (arkitektur) og Lars Arve Bratteberg (grafisk design) til presentasjon av oppgaven.
